Metalaxyl-M (Mefenoxam) is a benchmark systemic fungicide for controlling Oomycete diseases. Its high activity, low dosage, strong curative effect, and systemic movement make it an indispensable tool in modern crop protection, especially for seed treatment and root disease management. However, to ensure long-term effectiveness, resistance management and proper rotation with protective fungicides are essential.

| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Common Name | Metalaxyl-M |
| CAS No. | 70630-17-0 |
| Molecular Formula | C₁₅H₂₁NO₄ |
| Chemical Class | Phenylamide fungicide |
| Mode of Action Group | FRAC Group 4 (Phenylamides) |
Metalaxyl-M is the highly active stereoisomer of Metalaxyl, with a more targeted and efficient mechanism.
Targeted inhibition: Specifically suppresses ribosomal RNA (rRNA) synthesis in pathogenic fungi.
Metabolic disruption: Interferes with nucleic acid synthesis, halting mycelial growth and spore production.
Systemic absorption: Rapidly absorbed and translocated throughout the plant, providing both preventive and curative activity against pathogens that have already invaded plant tissues.
Superior bioactivity:
Metalaxyl-M is more biologically active than Metalaxyl, requiring only half the dosage for equal or better control.
Excellent systemic and curative effects:
Provides strong preventive and therapeutic activity — protects healthy plants and cures infected ones.
Long-lasting protection:
Stable within plant tissues, offering extended residual control.
Specific mode of action:
Highly effective only against Oomycete pathogens; not effective on other fungi or bacteria.
Highly effective against Oomycete-caused diseases, including:
Pythium spp. – damping-off, root rot
Phytophthora spp. – late blight on potato and tomato, pepper blight, cucumber blight
Downy mildew – on grape, cucumber, tobacco, and many vegetables
White rust and other Oomycete diseases
| Formulations | Usage |
|---|---|
| 35% FS (Flowable Seed Treatment) | Seed treatment against seed- and soil-borne Pythium and Phytophthora spp. |
| 480 g/L EC (Emulsifiable Concentrate) | Foliar spray for downy mildew and late blight |
| 60% WG (Water-Dispersible Granules) | Soil or foliar application for disease control |
Seed treatment: Protects seedlings from soilborne and seedborne pathogens.
Soil treatment: Root drenching or drip irrigation for root disease protection.
Foliar spray: Controls foliar diseases like downy mildew and late blight.
Always follow the label-recommended dosage for specific crops and local conditions.
Resistance risk: Due to its single-site mode of action, Oomycetes can easily develop resistance.
Always mix or rotate with multi-site protectants such as Mancozeb, Chlorothalonil, or Copper-based fungicides.
Target specificity: Effective only against Oomycetes — do not use for other fungal or bacterial diseases.
Observe pre-harvest intervals and local safety regulations for each crop.
